What do you like the most about Hong Kong?

“I hated Hong Kong people when I first moved here 11 years ago. They gave me the impression that they cared for no one.  But as I gradually got used to the local ways of dealing with people and things, I started to like the people here.  Actually Hong Kong people care for each other. They are easy-going and honest, they tell you what they think and they don’t hide their feelings.  They treat people, even strangers, well.  Now whenever I return to the mainland, I have culture shock. I don’t like how people treat one another on the mainland.  They may appear friendly and helpful but deep down in their heart, they are not.  They are hypocritical.  Money decides personal relationships in mainland China.”

What do you dislike the most about Hong Kong?

“Hong Kong lacks food from mother nature.   Once I bought a tomato from the market and I left it on the table when I got home. Somehow I’d go on to completely forget about it. To my surprise, when I picked it up again two months later, it hadn’t turned bad at all.  But organic tomatoes I bought from local farms would go bad after just two days.  At my hometown in Sichuan, the meat of the pork and chicken we eat is sweet and fresh.  Here in Hong Kong, they are tasteless and they smell bad.  I don’t eat pork and chicken here in Hong Kong.”

What does Hong Kong have to do to be sustainable?

“Hong Kong can’t build on every piece of land.  We must leave land for farming so more people can enjoy healthy and tasty local food.  There are too few farms in Hong Kong, the majority of the people in Hong Kong are deprived of the opportunity to enjoy local food.”
