“There was a period of time when I worked in the children’s book business. The children’s books were for the overseas market. Unlike children’s books in Hong Kong which are all about teaching kids vocabulary, books for the overseas market are designed to stimulate children’s senses. Therefore, I had to visit Sham Shui Po to get all sorts of fabrics, materials and accessories. The streets I went to most were Ki Lung Street, Yu Chau Street and Yen Chow Street. They were a total treasure trove of trendy fabrics, buttons, zips, needles, threads and accessories. The streets were always very crowded.
Sometimes when I returned to a shop to order some fabric that I had sampled earlier, it could already have been sold out. I’m sure this only happens in Sham Shui Po. But then, this probably isn’t surprising since every single piece of accessory can have more than 100 variations.”
