“I used to have this habit of jumping on the MTR and I would get off at each station to see what I could find outside. This was how I found Sham Shui Po. I would usually begin my walk at Dragon Centre, before checking out Apple Mall. Sometimes, I go for a massage, and then I walk around Tai Nam Street and Yen Chow Street. There are many things to see, whether at night or during the day. If I start early, I’ll also go to Apliu Street for gadgets and accessories. Later I’ll move down Yu Chau Street, a street with many newspaper stalls.
Yu Chau Street also has a dai pai dong. In the evenings, the food stall will move the tables and stools on to the street. Two rows of tenement buildings line the street. As the sun sets, many of the flats don’t put their lights on until it gets too dark to see anything. Looking up from the street, the wall of buildings gets illuminated by the street lamps. It is a very beautiful picture.
I can relax in Sham Shui Po because it is a down-to-earth place. The streets reflect those who live there; the shops sell day-to-day things that people actually need. Once I snuck into a building and climbed to the rooftop. The view from there across Sham Shui Po was magnificent. It is a view no other districts can offer.”
