The Sky of Sham Shui Po

Lam Sum

Occupation: Independent film director

Sham Shui Po connection: Has always lived in Sham Shui Po

“I’ve have been living in Sham Shui Po ever since I was born.  When I was young, my family lived on the rooftop of a tenement block behind Tack Ching Primary School.  The building borders Fook Wing Street and Yen Chow Street.  There were many small-scale chemical factories, like dyeing plants, on the street behind our block. It’s fun to see smoke coming out of the chimneys.

In the past, Sham Shui Po and Shek Kip Mei were under the flight path to Kai Tak Airport so I always saw planes flying over from my flat window.  The tenement blocks were only four to five stories tall, so I could see the sky, big and wide.  Whenever a plane flew over, I felt really close to it, so close that I could almost touch it.  That feeling was very special.

Shek Kip Mei Market is always very special to me.  My maternal grandparents are fishmongers, we have many cousins.  So every day after school, mum would take me to the fish stall where I could meet and play with my cousins.   We ran around and played.  Sometimes we would play hide and seek in the streets near the market.”
